The knot is used to tie items together, but it has also long been used in ways other than it's original inent. In ancient heraldic symbology, the knot stands for longevity, commitment and permanence.
Knots have long been used in jewelry of all types - particularly Celtic knots. Although this type of knot is associated with Celts, it was actually used much earlier dating to the early Vikings and Saxons.
One vintage designer who used knots exclusively is Sarah Coventry. The design pictured here is a lovely demi parure called Sarah's Circle - Silvertone. It features a brooch and matching pair of clip back earrings.
